Most repairs become easier once the damage is placed into one of four practical categories. Do not judge depth by appearance alone. A scratch can look deep because it collects dust, while a fine coating abrasion can appear almost invisible until it reflects light.
A useful first check is the fingernail test. Run a clean fingernail lightly across the mark. If it does not catch and the panel color is unchanged, start with cleaning and inspection rather than repair compound. If the nail catches, the protective layer has probably been damaged. If a different-colored core is visible, a simple polish will not restore the panel.
Surface marks are often mistaken for scratches. Rubber, luggage wheels, metal hardware, adhesive residue, and construction dust can all leave lines on decorative surfaces. Remove loose dirt with a soft microfiber cloth, then use a mild cleaner suitable for finished interior surfaces. Wipe gently and dry the area before deciding whether a scratch remains.

Sanding decorative surfaces as if they were solid wood. Many panel faces are thin decorative systems. Once the surrounding face is sanded through, localized repair becomes much harder and replacement may be the only clean option.

A replacement with the wrong grain orientation or a visibly different tone can create a new visual problem. Where the original material is available, compare it next to the installed panels before final fitting.
The most reliable scratch repair is usually the least invasive one that restores acceptable appearance and protects the panel from further deterioration. Clean what is only surface transfer, blend what has lost color, fill only where the substrate is exposed, and replace panels whose finish or structural condition cannot be restored cleanly.
